The supple Standard casing provides a good balance between low rolling resistance, comfort, and durability. The large air volume makes it possible to ride with relatively low tire pressure, resulting in a comfortable and stable ride on both asphalt and gravel.
Switchback Hill has also received praise for its road performance. In road.cc's Buyer’s Guide from 2024, the tire was named “Best 650B road bike tyre”. road.cc particularly highlighted the very supple casing and the tire’s ability to absorb uneven surfaces on asphalt. About the Extralight version, they wrote: “At just 412g per tyre; the extralight casing is super supple and soaks up tarmac miles with no obvious penalty over something much, much narrower.” They also noted that the tire can easily keep pace with much narrower road tires.
